Joseph Cocozzella, MD – Program Director
Dr. Cocozzella joined the faculty in 2012 and assumed the role of Program Director in January 2013. He graduated from George Washington School of Medicine and completed his Adult Psychiatry Residency and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Cocozzella supervises residents in the outpatient clinic.
Chitra Malur, MD – Department Chairwoman
Dr. Malur joined the department in December 2012 after holding the position of Chairwoman at East Orange General Hospital in New Jersey. Her expertise is in emergency psychiatry and electroconvulsive therapy. She attended Kilpauk Medical College and completed her residency training at State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Malur supervises residents in the emergency department and during their ECT rotation.
Stanley Cheren, MD
Dr. Cheren joined the faculty at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in 2010. He has extensive experience with training residents and conducting clinical trials. He graduated from Tufts School of Medicine and completed his residency training at Boston University School of Medicine. He serves as medical director of the outpatient clinic and supervises residents in the clinic.
Liliana Smurawska, MD
Dr. Smurawska joined the faculty in 2003 after completing her residency training at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. She graduated from the University of Warsaw in Poland. She is Medical Director at the nearby Brighton Marine Clinic and serves as an attending physician on the adult inpatient unit.
Norman Zarsky, MD
Dr. Zarsky joined the faculty in 2011 following a faculty position at Cambridge Health Alliance. He graduated from UMass Medical School and completed his residency and geriatric psychiatry fellowship at Cambridge Hospital. He supervises residents and students on the Consultation/Liaison service and the Geriatric Psychiatry rotation.
Larisa Kouperschmidt, MD
Dr. Kouperschmidt joined the faculty in 2012 on the inpatient service. She earned and MD and a PhD in Neurology from the Russian State Medical University and completed her residency training at Cabrini Hospital. She supervises residents on their inpatient and ECT rotations.
Grigoriy Labun, MD
Dr. Labun joined the faculty in 2013 as the medical director of the inpatient unit. He graduated from the State Classical Academy in Moscow and completed his residency training at Tufts Medical Center.
Ashish Gupta, MD
Dr. Gupta graduated from the Psychiatry residency program at St. Elizabeth’s in 2013 and stayed as an attending physician. He graduated from Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi. Dr. Gupta supervises residents on the inpatient service.
Jacqueline Samson, PhD
Dr. Samson is a clinical psychologist at McLean Hospital. She teaches formal didactic courses in psychotherapy and provides supervision in psychotherapy to residents.
Walter Brown, MD
Dr. Brown is on the faculty at Brown University and teaches didactic courses in Psychopathology and Evidence-Based Medicine. He also leads a journal club for PGY1 and PGY2 residents.
Additional faculty members from within and outside the medical center provide supervision in psychotherapy, community psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, addiction, neurology, and child/adolescent psychiatry.
Several recent graduates have transitioned to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowships at Tufts Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, Cambridge Health Alliance, and other prestigious institutions across the country. Residents have also entered other subspecialty fellowships such as Geriatric Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine. Others have taken positions as attending physicians within the Steward system and at facilities in the local area and around the country. Some choose to remain in Boston while others practice in underserved communities.
